The renowned American dance company MOMIX returns to Spanish stages with its latest show, ALICE. In a perfect blend of illusion, acrobatics, magic, and fantasy, MOMIX whisks the audience down the rabbit hole in Moses Pendleton’s new creation, ALICE, a personal and completely free adaptation of one of the most recognizable, whimsical, entertaining, and magical stories in universal literature: Alice in Wonderland, published in 1865 by Lewis Carroll.

Known internationally for its exceptionally inventive and physically beautiful works, the company of dancer-illusionists directed by the acclaimed choreographer Moses Pendleton returns to Spanish stages with its new show, ALICE.

ALICE shows us an Alice in permanent transformation, a body without defined limits that grows, shrinks, and grows again in a dance full of magic and visual effects. In this new twist by MOMIX, Pendleton’s dancers expand their own bodies through supports, ropes, and the bodies of other dancers, surrounded by an impressive display of images, mirages, music, artifacts, and the exquisite and dazzling costumes created by Phoebe Katzin.

I don’t intend to retell the whole story of Alice, but to use it as a starting point for invention. I’m curious to see what comes out of it, and my curiosity continues to grow as I study Lewis Carroll, who was a passionate photographer like myself.

About Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland began as a story told to Alice, a ten-year-old girl, and her two sisters during a river excursion by a shy Victorian mathematician who called himself Lewis Carroll. Later, Carroll wrote the story and had John Tenniel illustrate it. More than 150 years later, many children (and adults) around the world know Alice and her adventures as well as if they had dreamed them themselves.

The “real Alice” moved Lewis Carroll to write his fantastic tale of underground adventures for her when she was only ten years old. That little story, starring Alice herself as a sensible girl in an absurd universe, is a world full of fantasy and fun. It is not surprising that it is the inspiration for the new show created by Moses Pendleton. Because he is also a creator of worlds that resemble dreams and that are often populated by strange and whimsical presences.
